General

This past month has flown by and when I think back some of it is a blur ha! Life with a newborn. But overall it's been very good and enjoyable. The biggest thing is just juggling sleep and making sure Dan and I are getting enough of it. It's been amazing to have him home and he helps me get the sleep that I need. Carson is doing great- he's following all his growth curves, he's showing good developmental signs and gaining weight like it's nobody's business. He has a double chin and is starting to get cheeks and rolls, so cute!

Brooks really loves Carson and although you can tell he's adjusting to another child in the home and having some growing pains, he's not taking it out on Carson... well not yet at least. He is a great helper and wants to be included with helping Carson and putting his binky back in. When it comes to babies their crying peaks at 6 weeks and starts to level off. So far Carson has actually been pretty good and I would say has cried less than Brooks did, but we're only at 4 weeks so you never know what could change!

Breastfeeding

Nursing him has been going really well. We did have one weekend where he was crazy, fussy, wouldn't nurse and hardly slept but I think it may have come from the chocolate I ate on Valentine's Day so I'm being more careful about that. Since Carson takes a bottle I've been pumping to have a little freezer stash. I got a new pump this time and went with a Spectra and it's amazing! I mostly got it for it's rechargeable feature but as I've used it there are tons of things I like better about this one than the medela I had last time. The Spectra has different cycle speeds which changes the suction speed. With this small change in setting I've been able to pump more milk in a smaller amount of time. I'd totally recommend it!

He's been eating every 3 hours pretty regularly. Unfortunately it's more like 2.5 hrs at night which I don't love. In the last day he's been stretching to 4 hours so I'm crossing my fingers that'll continue, I mean it's not like he's hurting for weight, the chunk!

Sleeping

Carson usually stays awake around an hour after eating before he starts getting fussy and goes back down to sleep. As he's getting older he's needed more soothing and help to fall asleep which I expected. During the day we'll lay him in the dockatot for naps, if he's really not falling asleep we'll use the mamaroo (which we're borrowing from friends, thanks!) and at night he sleeps in a bassinet next to me. He's always swaddled with white noise and sometimes has the bink, he's not great at keeping it in yet.

Right now Carson seems to sleep longer during the day than at night which isn't ideal so I've been trying to change than but newborns are so unpredictable it's pretty much just survival until they're about 2 months and start showing signs they're capable of self soothing. So that's where we are right now, just surviving and adjusting to our new normal!
